Reporter: Please tell us your name, age and where you were born?
Mrs Quan: My full name is NHAN HUC QUAN, age 44. I was born in 1967 in Fujian, China). I am holding a Vietnamese – Chinese citizenship.
Reporter: What drew you to invest in Viet Nam?
Mrs Quan: I'm not an investor but an employee, responsible for the administration and management of the business in the manufacturing sector under FDI.
Reporter: When New Toyo Vietnam was newly formed, did you meet any difficulties? And how did you manage to overcome these difficulties?
Mrs Quan: "There is always difficulty in everything" I am fully aware that there will be problems and obstacles to face at all times. Especially in the 90s, when our country was just opening up to the inflow of foreign investments. Our legal system was not ready to handle the influx of investment. The country’s public administration was also very bureaucratic. The workforce was lacking in skills, knowledge and modern management. Our communication system was poor and the entry and exit procedures for businessmen were restrictive.
During that time, we started tepidly with business exploration into Vietnam. Our facilities were mostly rental because there were uncertainties due to the lack of infrastructure in setting up a full manufacturing operation.
Maybe because I have been through a period of "eating red potatoes instead of rice", so I am able to rise above and overcome these difficulties. I always remind myself: "to meet any difficulty, we have to stick to our wisdom", living in adversity, facing new challenges, I have the chance to mature. It would be rather easy to be contented with a comfortable lifestyle and we will end up becoming lazy and complacent. Our elders have told us …”for when men labor they keep out of mischief, remember the old proverb--An idle mind is the Devil’s workshop”. I am afraid to have too much time on my hands.
Reporter: In your business dealing, what do you feel is most important?
Mrs Quan: Honesty and sincerity. Professional business ethics is most important.
Reporter: What is the outlook of your Company in the coming years?
Mrs Quan: Aluminum foil packaging sector is still our main products, but next year we will expand into the manufacturing of packaging for food whereby the packaging is able to be recycled, convenient to use and has to be safe when it comes into contact with food.
Reporter: You have been interviewed by the press previous and mentioned that sometimes you feel alone. During those times, how did you manage to overcome that feeling?
Mrs Quan: "Alone" does not mean there is no soul mate. It means that there are some business ideas and decisions which cannot be shared or discussed. There are times when I have done things on my own intuition, but not everyone could understand and sympathize with them. Many businessmen have been criticized as "crazy", “deaf and not afraid of guns "or "going about collecting silver coins"...no matter, what people say I am responsible for my decisions and my actions.
Reporter: What impressed you most about the country and the people of Vietnam?
Mrsquan: Vietnam is blessed with many natural resources, and the people are fine looking, have good learning ability, are creativity and hardworking. In particular, Vietnamese women are especially admired by foreigners because they can keep the balance between family and work.
Reporter: Could you share some of your childhood memories, example times when you were a student. Are there some factors from your younger days which influence the way you manage the business?
Mrs Quan: When I was a student, I enjoyed participating in school lessons and activities like art, poetry, doing radio broadcasting, being one of many fans cheering for the district or city basketball leagues, working in the cafeteria during summer. During those times, there were not many varieties of food, clothing and entertainment as enjoyed by the teenagers nowadays. But I have to say that all the things I had done in my younger days, I find it enjoyable and meaningful. Everything I did during that time, I gave my all to practice and participate.
I remembered Uncle Ho’s word - “People at a young age work less, depending on their health" which sums up my experience at school.
The majority of successful people have arisen from adversity, through diligence and hard work. They have a great ability to overcome difficulties.
Reporter: Lastly what would you like to share with our readers?
Mrs Quan: If you want to be successful in the future, you will have to make friends with people like that now.
